Caring for your microgreens
- Use a sharp knife or kitchen scissors when harvesting your microgreens. Level your cutting utensil with the top of the tray and cut what you need.
- Keep your microgreens inside. If space is an issue, and they must be outdoors, the garage is 2nd best to the kitchen, otherwise a covered patio. The warmer the environment, the more you will need to be mindful of watering. Direct outdoor sun and summer heat can kill your microgreens in an hour. So choose carefully.
- Keep them away from heat (oven, hot windowsill, heater).
- You can place your entire flat of microgreens in the refrigerator. Cold spots in the refrigerator may cause some wilting but generally works just fine.
- Thirsty microgreens? Do NOT water from above. You will notice your microgreens are in not one - but two trays nested together. Lift a corner of the top tray up and pour in 4-5 cups-ish of water into the bottom tray. It doesn’t take much. The water should not be more than 1/3 of an inch high. The roots are already established and will happily drink the water from the bottom tray.
- You do not need a specific temperature or lighting. Heat will be your biggest enemy. Find a nice countertop space that will become your “microgreen counter.”
